1. 用作動詞，表示“產生結果”或“有某種結果”，是不及物動詞，表示先因后果后接介詞 in；表示先果后因后接介詞 from。如：
Love results in marriage, naturally. 戀愛終歸于婚姻(有情人終成眷屬)。
His failure resulted from his carelessness. 他的失敗是由他的粗心造成的。
比較：
Success results from hard work. 成功來自于努力工作。
Hard work results in success. 努力工作可以導致成功。
2. 用作名詞，用于as a result, 意為“結果”、“因此”。如：
As a result he was forced to leave home. 結果他被迫離開了家。
He had some bad fish. As a result, he felt ill. 他吃了些壞魚，結果感到不舒服。
表示“由于……的結果”，后接介詞 of。如：
He was late as a result of(=because of) the snow. 由于下雪，他遲到了。
注：as a result 這一結構中，用不定冠詞，但在 as a [the] result 這一結構中，卻用不定冠詞或定冠詞均可。如：
As a [the] result of his hard work, he got a pay rise. 由于他工作勤奮，所以他加了工資。
◆return v.
1. 用作動詞，表示“回來”、“返回”，其義相當于 go (come)back, 所以一般不再與副詞 back 連用，以免構成用詞重復。
2. 表示“歸還”，可接雙賓語；若雙賓語易位，用介詞 to。如：
He didn’t return me the book. ＝He didn’t return the book to me. 他沒有還書給我。
3. 用作名詞，表示“歸來”、“歸還”、“回報”，通常用作不可數名詞，但有時可與不定冠詞連用。如：
We look forward to your return from
He didn’t expect any return from what he had done. 他對他所做的一切，一點不圖回報。
These flowers are a small return for your kindness. 向你獻花聊表謝忱。
比較 in return (for) 與 on [upon] one’s return：前者意為“作為……的報答(交換)”；后者意為“回來的時候”。如：
What can I do in return for your kindness? 我怎樣做才能報答你的好意呢?
On his return from work he found her asleep. 他下班回來，發現她睡著了。
4. 比較：a returned student(歸國留學生)，a return ticket
(來回票，雙程票)
◆rich adj.
1. 用于 the rich, 表示“富人”，表示復數意義。如：
The rich are not always happy. 有錢人并不一定總很快樂。
注：the rich 可以有修飾語。如：
You can tell the very rich by their evening dress. 你可以從晚禮服認出那些極有錢的富人。
2. 比較 rich and poor 與 rich or poor：前者相當于名詞，意為“窮人和富人”，后者相當于副詞，用作狀語(表示讓步)，意為“不管是窮人還是富人”。如：
Rich and poor celebrate the Spring Festival. 窮人和富人都慶祝春節。
Rich or poor, they are all my friends. 不管是窮人還是富人，他們都是我的朋友。
