◆river n.

1. 與介詞 on 連用，有時表示“在河上”、“在河里”，有時表示“在河畔”。比較：

Let’s go boating on the river. 我們去河里劃船吧。

London is on the River Thames. 倫敦位于泰晤士河岸。

2. 用于專有名詞時，英國英語通常將 River加在名稱之前；而美國英語則通常將 River加在名稱之后，但不管是英國英語還是美國英語，在含有 River 的專有名詞前，一般都用定冠詞。如：the River Thames(泰晤士河)，the Hudson River(哈德遜河)，the Changjiang River(長江)，the Yellow River(黃河)等。

He lives at 62 Nangjing Road. 他住在南京路62號。

◆rob v.

1. 用作動詞，表示“搶劫”、“剝奪”等，是及物動詞，注意其賓語通常只能是人或場所，而不能是被搶的東西；若要表示所搶的東西，用介詞 of 引出。如：

這個人搶了她的錢包。

正：The man robbed her of her wallet.

誤：The man robbed her wallet.

他們劫富濟貧。

正:They robbed the rich to help the poor.

誤:They robbed the money from the rich to help the poor.

注：They robbed the boy. 指“他們搶了這個小孩的東西”，不是“把這個小孩搶走了”，表示后者的意思要用 They kidnapped the boy. (他們綁架了這個小孩)等。

2. 可用于比喻，指“剝奪”某人有權利享用的東西。如：

They’ve robbed me of my happiness. 他們奪走了我的幸福。

They robbed the people of their liberty. 他們剝奪了人民的自由。

◆rule n.

表示“習慣”、“慣例”、“常規”等，比較以下同義句型：

他有早起的習慣。

正：He makes it a rule to get up early.

正：He makes a rule of getting up early.

正：It is his rule to get up early.

正：His rule is to get up early.

正：It’s a rule with him to get up early.
