1. 表示“準備好的”，通常只用作表語，其后可接不定式或介詞for 短語。如：
We are ready to start. 我們已準備好出發。
Everything is ready for the party. 有關晚會的一切事宜均已準備就緒。
注：有時構成復合賓語。如：
Go and get the boat ready. 去把船準備好。
He always kept a gun ready. 他總是備著一支槍。
另外注意，后接不定式且不定式的邏輯賓語就是句子的主語時，該不定式用主動式或被動式均可。如：
The cake is ready to eat [to be eaten]. 這餅可以吃了。
The letters are ready to post [to be posted]. 這信已準備好可以寄了。
2. 表示“愿意(做某事)的”、“老愛”等，通常只用作表語，其后常接不定式或介詞 with 短語。如：
He’s always ready to help others. 他總是樂于助人。
Don’t be so ready to find fault. 不要動不動就挑毛病。
He is very ready to give advice. / He is very ready withadvice. 他老愛給人提建議。
3. 表示“簡直要”、“就要”，通常只用作表語，其后通常接不定式。如：
She seems ready to cry. 她似乎要哭了。
The rope is ready to break. 這繩子要斷了。
4. 表示“反應快的”、“敏捷的”、“迅速的”、“現成的”等義，主要用作定語。如：
He has a ready tongue. 他能說會道。
He always has a ready answer. 他總能脫口而出地作出回答。
Pay him ready money [ready cash]. 付給他現款。
◆realiz v.
1. 表示“明白”、“意識到”，是及物動詞，其后可接名詞、代詞或從句等作賓語，但不用于進行時態，也不用于被動語態。如：
He didn’t realize his mistake. 他沒有意識到他的錯誤。
Finally I realized what he meant. 最后我明白了他的意思。
She realized that he had been lying. 她明白了他一直都在說謊。
2. 表示“實現”，也是及物動詞，其賓語通常為 dream(夢想)， hope(愿望)，wish(愿望)，aim(目的)，plan(計劃)，ideal(理想)，goal(目標)，intention(愿望)，ambition(雄心，野心)等，通常用于被動語態。如：
His dream of becoming a policeman was realized. 他當警察的夢想實現了。
He realized his intention of becoming an actor. 他實現了當演員的愿望。
注：有時指恐懼、不安等成為現實。如：
Her worst fears were realized. 他最擔心的事終于發生了。
◆really adv.
表示“真正地”、“的確”、“確實”等，注意它在句中位置不同可能會導致含義上的變化。如：
He is really a foolish fellow. 他的確是個笨蛋。
He is a really foolish fellow. 他是個真正的笨蛋。
We really don’t like her. 我們確實不喜歡她。
We don’t really like her. 我們不大喜歡她。
I really don’t mind waiting. 要我等，我一點不在乎。
I don’t really mind waiting. 要我等，我不是一點不在乎。
Really, I didn’t mean to hurt you. 其實呀，我不是有意要傷害你。
I didn’t really mean to hurt you. 我真的不是有意要傷害你。
◆reduce v.
1. 表示“減少”、“縮小”等，通常用作及物動詞。如：
They have reduced the expenses this year. 他們今年壓縮了開支。
She’s too fat and she must reduce her weight. 她太胖了，必須減肥。
注：在非正式文體中，reduce有時可用作不及物動詞，表示“減肥”。如：
Please don’t give me any cake because I’m trying to reduce. 請不要給我甜餅，因為我在減肥。
