1. 用作名詞，表示“研究”、“調(diào)查”等，是不可數(shù)名詞，但有時可用復(fù)數(shù)形式，要表示在某一方面進行研究，通常用介詞 on, into, in 等。如：
Research has shown that women live longer than men. 調(diào)查表明女人比男人活得長。
His researches are nearly finished now. 他的研究工作已基本完成。
They’re doing research(es) into the causes of cancer. 他們在研究癌癥的病因。
注：對人或動物進行研究，通常用介詞 on。如：
do research on monkeys 對猴子進行研究
在現(xiàn)代英語中，research通常用作不可數(shù)名詞或用復(fù)數(shù)形式，注意，雖然可用復(fù)數(shù)形式，但不能用數(shù)詞或 many 修飾。另外偶爾可見到 a research 的用例，但不屬普通用法。
2. 用作動詞，表示“研究”、“調(diào)查”等，可用作及物或不及物動詞；用作不及物動詞時，要表示“對……進行研究”，通常用介詞into, on 等。如：
He’s researching (into) Old English poetry. 他在研究古英語詩歌。
They are researching into [on] the effects of cigarette smoking. 他們在研究吸煙的影響。
注：對人或動物進行研究，通常用介詞 on。如：
research on monkeys 對猴子進行研究
◆respect v.
1. 用作動詞，表示“尊敬”、“尊重”，是及物動詞。如：
He became respected everywhere. 他到處受到尊重。
I promise to respect your wishes. 我保證尊重你的意愿。
有時接反身代詞，意為“自尊”、“自重”等。如：
If you don’t respect yourself, how can you expect others to respect you? 自己不自重，又怎能受到別人的尊重呢?
2. 用作名詞，表示“尊敬”、“尊重”等，是不可數(shù)名詞，但有時其前有形容詞修飾，也可與不定冠詞連用。如：
I had much [a great] respect for him. 我非常尊敬他。
Children should show respect for their teachers. 學(xué)生要尊敬老師。
注：若表示“問候”、“敬意”，則要用復(fù)數(shù)形式。如：
Please give [send] her my respects. / Please give [send]my respects to her. 請代我問候她。
◆rest n. & v.
1. 用作名詞，表示“休息”，若泛指一般意義的“休息”，是不可數(shù)名詞；表示“一次休息”、“一段休息”，是可數(shù)名詞。如：
Rest is necessary after hard work. 辛苦工作之后休息是必要的。
We had several rests on our way up the mountain. 我們在上山的途中休息了幾次。
2. 表示“其余的人或物”、“剩下的部分”，其前必須有 the；用作主語時，其謂語要根據(jù)它所指的內(nèi)容，可用單數(shù)或復(fù)數(shù)。如：
The rest needs no telling. 其余的就不用說了。
All the rest (of them) are coming later. 所有(他們)其余的人過后就來。
3. 用作動詞，表示“休息”，是不及物動詞。如：
She rested (=had a rest) from her work. 她停下手中的工作休息了一會兒。
注：若表示“使休息”，則為及物動詞。如：
We stopped to rest the horse. 我們停下來給馬休息。
