95. envisage  to imagine what will happen in the future.

[vn that] It is envisaged that the talks will take place in the spring.

[v that] The plan envisaged that most of the new Soviet immigrants would find work in the private sector.

96. envision  (especially AmE) = envisage.

[v that] Most people do stop at this point, not envisioning that there is anything beyond.

97. establish    to discover or prove the facts of a situation.

[v that] They have established that his injuries were caused by a fall.  [vn that] It has since been established that the horse was drugged.

98. estimate  [often passive] estimate sth (at sth) to form an idea of the cost, size, value etc. of sth, but without calculating it exactly.

[v (that) ] We estimated (that) it would cost about ê5 000.

[vn (that) ] It is estimated (that) the project will last four years.

99. exclaim  to say sth suddenly and loudly, especially because of strong emotion or pain

[v that]Tawell, who was deeply affronted that such a respectable businessman should be arrested on such a charge, exclaimed that he had never heard of Sara Hart, nor of Salt Hill, and he had definitely never been there.

100. exhort    (formal) to try hard to persuade sb to do sth.  

[v that]He exhorted that I would soon be able to afford that Lexus, or that Kincaid painting I had my eyes on.

101. expect

(1) to think or believe that sth will happen or that sb will do sth. [v (that) ] Many people were expecting (that) the peace talks would break down.

[vn that] It is expected that the report will suggest some major reforms.

(2) (informal, especially BrE) (not used in the progressive tenses) used when you think sth is probably true.

[v that] ‘Who’s eaten all the cake?’ ‘Tom, I expect / I expect it was Tom.’

102. explain

(1) to tell sb about sth in a way that makes it easy to understand. [v that] I explained that an ambulance would be coming soon.

[vn that] I explained to them that three days in Beijing was very little time to see all the sights.

(2) to give a reason, or be a reason, for sth.

[v that] Alex explained that his car had broken down.

103. fancy  (literary) to believe or imagine sth

[v (that) ] She fancied (that) she could hear footsteps.

104. fantasize    to imagine that you are doing sth that you would like to do, or that sth that you would like to happen is happening, even though this is very unlikely.

[v that] I fantasize that I can enter the show on his arm, so I tell him my tale of woe.

105. fear  to feel that sth bad might have happened or might happen in the future.(This pattern is only used in the passive.)

[vn (that) ] It is feared (that) he may have been kidnapped.  

[v(that) ] She feared (that) he might be dead.       

106. feel  to think or believe that sth is the case; to have a particular opinion or attitude 

[v (that) ] We all felt (that) we were unlucky to lose.

I felt (that) I had to apologize.   

107. figure   (INFORMAL) to think or guess that something is the case.

[v that]She figured that both she and Ned had learned a lot from the experience.

108. figure out  to think about sb/sth until you understand them.

[v that] I figured out that if this is what David wants and I’m not going to give it to him.

109. find 

(1) to discover that sth is true after you have tried it, tested it or experienced it.

[v (that) ] I find (that) it pays to be honest.               

(2) to discover sb/sth/yourself doing sth or in a particular situation, especially when this is unexpected.

[v (that) ] I was disappointed to find that they had left already.

120. find out  to get some information about sth/sb by asking, reading, etc.

[v that] We found out later that we had been at the same school.

121. fix  If you fix something for someone, you arrange for it to happen or you organize it for them.

[v that] They’d fixed yesterday that Mike’d be in late today.

122. flatter  to choose to believe sth good about yourself and your abilities, especially when other people do not share this opinion.

[vn (that) ] We flatter ourselves that we provide the best service in town. 我們相信我們在本市提供最好的服務。

123. foresee  to think sth is going to happen in the future; to know about sth before it happens .

[v (that) ] No one could have foreseen (that) things would turn out this way.

124. forecast  to say what you think will happen in the future based on information that you have now.

[v that] The report forecasts that prices will rise by 3% next month.

125. foretell  (literary) to know or say what will happen in the future, especially by using magic .

[v that] The witch foretold that she would marry a prince.
