31. beg  to ask sb for sth especially in an anxious way because you want or need it very much.

[v that] (formal) She begged that she be allowed to go.

(BrE also) She begged that she should be allowed to go.

32. believe (not used in the progressive tenses)

(1) to feel certain that sth is true or that sb is telling you the truth

[v (that) ] People used to believe (that) the earth was flat.

He refused to believe (that) his son was involved in drugs.

I do believe you’re right (= I think sth is true, even though it is surprising)

(2) to think that sth is true or possible, although you are not completely certain.

[v (that) ] Police believe (that) the man may be armed.

[vn (that) ] It is believed that the couple have left the country. 

(3) [v (that) ] to have the opinion that sth is right or true

The party believes (that) education is the most important issue facing the government.

(4) (don’t / can’t連用) used to say that you are surprised or annoyed at sth.

[v (that) ] She couldn’t believe (that) it was all happening again. 

33. bellow to shout in a loud deep voice, especially because you are angry.

[v that] And when the voters bellowed that they were sick of it, the politicians promised that it would stop.

34. bet 

(1) to risk money on a race or an event by trying to predict the result.

[v that, vn that] She bet me £20 that I wouldn’t do it. 

(2) (informal) used to say that you are almost certain that sth is true or that sth will happen.

[v (that) ] I bet (that) we’re too late.  

You can bet (that) the moment I sit down, the phone will ring.

[vn (that) ] I’ll bet you (that) he knows all about it.

35. bleat  to speak in a weak or complaining voice.

[v that] …, he bleated that he was the ‘victim’ of a tabloid newspaper war.

36.boast  to talk with too much pride about sth that you have or can do.  

[v that] Sam boasted that she could beat anyone at poker.

37. brag  (disapproving) to talk too proudly about sth you own or sth you have.

[v that] He bragged that he needed a special licence to bring it on the bus.

38. burble  (BrE, disapproving) to speak in a confused or silly way that is difficult to hear or understand.

[v that] Metzger burbles that this decor constitutes "taking the revolutionary and updating it for today."

39. calculate 

(1) to use numbers to find out a total number, amount, distance, etc. 

[vn that] It has been calculated that at least 47 000 jobs were lost last year.

(2) to guess sth or form an opinion by using all the information available SYN  estimate.

[v that] Conservationists calculate that hundreds of species could be lost in this area.

40. caution  to warn sb about the possible dangers or problems of sth.

[v that] The government cautioned that pay increases could lead to job losses.

[vn that] The policeman said,“I must caution you that anything you say may be used against you at your trail.” 

41. certify   to state officially, especially in writing, that sth is true.

[v (that) ] He handed her a piece of paper certifying (that) she was in good health.

This (= this document) is to certify that …

42. chant   to sing or shout the same words or phrases many times.

[v that] The children chanted that I was Michael Jackson, an American doctor, a wearer of gold, and asked that my enemies be consumed in flames.

43. check    to find out if sth is correct or true or if sth is how you think it is.

[v (that) ] Go and check (that) I’ve locked the windows. 

44. claim   to say that sth is true although it has not been proved and other people may not believe it.

[v (that) ] He claims (that) he was not given a fair hearing. 

[vn that] It was claimed that some doctors were working 80 hours a week. 

45. command   to tell sb to do sth.      

[v that] (formal) The commission intervened and commanded that work on the building cease.

(BrE also) The commission commanded that work on the building should cease. 

46. comment  to express an opinion about sth

[v that] A spokesperson commented that levels of carbon dioxide were very high. 

47. complain  to say that you are annoyed, not satisfied, or unhappy about something or someone.

[v that] She complained that no one had been at the airport to meet her.

48. concede  to admit that sth is true, logical, etc         

[v (that) ] He was forced to concede (that) there might be difficulties. [vn that] It must be conceded that different judges have different approaches to these cases.

49. conceive  (formal) to form an idea, a plan, etc. in your mind; to imagine sth.

[v (that) ] I cannot conceive (= I do not believe) (that) he would wish to harm us. 

50. concur   to agree.

[v that]In theory, at least, all Europe’s new member-states concur that the dissolution of single-party rule constitutes a clean break with the communist era.
