誤用：During he was in Japan, he visited many places. 改為：During his stay in Japan, he visited many places. 說明：during 是介詞，不是連詞，其后可接名詞或代詞，但不可接句子。又如：During his stay in Paris, he lived with his friends. 他在巴黎期間，與他的朋友住在一起。 句意：他在日本期間，參觀過許多地方。 誤用：Nick was already nursing a grudge against her because what happened this morning. She did not want to give him any additional cause for grievance. 改為：Nick was already nursing a grudge against her because of what happened this morning. She did not want to give him any additional cause for grievance. 說明：許多同學在寫作時只是機械地記住：because 是連詞，后接句子，引導原因狀語從句；而because of 是介詞，后接名詞或代詞——這本來是完全正確的。但是，用作連詞的 because 后只能接沒有“引導詞”的句子，而對于由 what 這類相當于名詞的從句，其前應用 because of，而不是用 because。又如：He left the company because of what the boss said at the meeting. 他離開了這家公司，是因為老板在會上講的話。 句意：因為上午發生的事，尼克已經對她懷恨在心。她因此不想再給他增添不滿的理由。 誤用：I’ll try to get there on time tomorrow but, if I fail, wait me, please, I’ll sure arrive after a few minutes. 改為：I’ll try to get there on time tomorrow but, if I fail, wait for me, please, I’ll sure arrive after a few minutes. 說明：wait 表示“等”是不及物動詞，要表示等某人，英語應說 wait for sb，而不是 wait sb。又如：While waiting for the water to boil he made another trip to the bedroom. 等水燒開的時候，他又去了一次寢室。 句意：明天我會設法準時到達那里，但是若是我沒趕到，請等我一下，過了幾分鐘我一定會到。
誤用：Profits increased £1.5m, despite the difficult economic conditions. 改為：Profits increased by £1.5m, despite the difficult economic conditions. 說明：表示增加了多少，通常應在increase后用介詞by，又如：The real wage of the average worker has increased by a factor of over ten in the last 70 years. 近70年來工人的實際工資平均增長超過了10倍。但是，如是指增加了百多之多少，而可以省略介詞by，如：Sales increased (by) thirty per cent compared to last year. 和去年相比銷售量提高了30%。 句意：盡管經濟形勢不佳，利潤還是增長了150萬英鎊。 |
