◆piano n.
表示“鋼琴”，若是表示鋼琴這種具體的東西，是可數名詞；若是表示鋼琴演奏、鋼琴理論、鋼琴技巧等較為抽象的意義，則通常為不可數名詞(其前一般用定冠詞)。如：
He has two pianos. 他有兩部鋼琴。
She plays the piano very well. 她鋼琴彈得好。
She studies the piano under Mr Smith. 她在史密斯先生的指導下學習鋼琴。
注：piano 的復數形式為 pianos 不是 pianoes。
◆picnic n. & v.
1. 用作名詞，表示“野餐”、“郊游”，是可數名詞。如：
He went on [for] a picnic in the country. 他去了鄉下郊游(野餐)。
注：用于引申義，用于 be no picnic, 意為“不是輕松愉快的事或工作”。如：
It’s no picnic taking 60 kids to the museum. 要帶60個小孩去博物館可不是件輕松的事。
2. 用作動詞，意為“去野餐”、“去郊游”，是不及物動詞，注意它的過去式、過去分詞以及現在分詞等，須先在其后先加字母 k再加詞尾 -ed 或 -ing。如：
They are picnicking in the woods. 他們正在樹林里野餐。
◆piece n.
表示“(一)塊”、“(一)張”、“(一)片”等，用于a piece of之類的結構，其后常接 bread, chalk, paper, wood, glass, coal等非液體性的物質名詞，或 news, advice, work, information, music 等抽象名詞。如：a piece of cloth(一塊布)，a piece of bread( 一塊面包)，a piece of news(一條消息)，two pieces of advice( 兩條建議)等。
注：不要受中文影響，將 a piece of 用于具有“塊”、“張”等意義的單數可數名詞前。如：
一張票(一張郵票、一篇作文、一塊手帕)
誤：a piece of ticket (stamp, composition, handkerchief)
正：a ticket (stamp, composition, handkerchief)
2. 與形容詞連用時，形容詞一般應放在 piece 之前。如：
a small piece of paper 一張小紙條
a large piece of meat 一大塊肉
有時可將形容詞置于 piece 前或置于其后名詞前。如：
a good piece of advice/a piece of good advice 一條好建議
有時從語義上考慮，可能置于其后名詞前更合適。如：
pieces of broken glass 破玻璃片
◆pity n.
1. 表示一般意義的“同情”、“憐憫”等，是不可數名詞；表示具體意義的“可惜的事”、“遺憾的事”等，是可數名詞。如：
We helped her out of pity. 我們是出于同情而幫助她。
What a pity you can’t come. 你不能來真是遺憾。
2. 表示同情某人，其后通常用介詞 for。如：
I feel no pity for you at all. 我一點也不同情你。
He was full of pity for the poor. 他很同情窮人。
但是，have (take) pity on 中通常用介詞 on。如：
Do have [take] pity on me. 千萬要可憐可憐我。
She took pity on him and gave him some money. 她同情他，給了他一些錢。
3. 在“It’s a pity＋that 從句”這一句式中，有時可省略句首的 It’s a。如：
他沒有及早想到這一點真是遺憾。
正：Pity that he didn’t think of this earlier.
正：It’s a pity that he didn’t think of this earlier.
注：有時其后的從句可用虛擬語氣，尤其是當從句有“竟然”之意時。如：
Pity [It’s a pity] that you should have to leave. 你非走不可真是可惜。
It’s a pity that he should have failed in the exam. 他竟然沒有考及格真是遺憾。
