2. THE “MIRACLE” GROUP

These nouns indicate that someone thinks of a situation as being good, usually very good indeed.

(1) blessing 幸運;幸事

It’s a blessing that I’ve stayed in the game this long.

(2) comfort 安慰;慰藉

On the other hand, it was a comfort that she hadn’t abandoned Maya as she had done to the ice owl.

(3) fluke 僥幸;偶然

It was a fluke that I had a clear view of him.

(4) marvel 奇跡

It was a marvel that they could afford the cottage at all: They’d had to go over their budget to outbid eleven other potential owners.

(5) relief 寬慰;輕松

3. THE “FALLCY” GROUP

These nouns indicate that something is either true or false.

(1) fact 事實;真相

It is a fact that we are cousins of gorillas, kangaroos, starfish, and bacteria.

(2) fallacy 謬論;謬見

It is a fallacy that development in other countries will hurt developed countries such as the United States.

(3) lie  謊言

It is a lie that he served with him 40 years ago.

(4) misconception  誤解;錯誤印象

It is a misconception that Marburg victims bleed to death, said Dr. Feldmann, the Winnipeg virologist.

(5) myth 錯誤觀念;荒誕說法

4. NOUNS WITH OTHER MEANINGS

These are a number of other abstract nouns which have this pattern.

(1) accident 事故,意外事件

It was hardly an accident that advertisers were fickle.

(2) certainty 必然的事;確定的事

It’s a certainty that Paterno will be back to break Bryant’s record next year.

(3) cliché  老生常談;套話

It’s almost a cliché that New Mexico is called the ‘land of enchantment.’

(4) coincidence 巧合;同時發生

Is it just a coincidence that in New York State what was found to be the best area also happens to be the poorest out of 62 counties?

(5) consolation 安慰

Of course it was no consolation that the man she loved, planned to spend her life with, was lying dead just beyond the glass before her.

(6) farce 鬧劇場面

(7) irony 具有諷刺意味的情況

"Absolutely," Price replies." It’s an irony that a place predicated on personal transformation can be so ambivalent about change."

(8) joke 笑話;玩笑

She thinks it’s a joke that he can’t sleep. She thinks if only he tried harder.

(9) miracle 不可思議的事;奇跡

And it was a miracle that I survived.

(10) mystery 神秘事物;謎

It was a mystery that many thought would never be solved.

(11) paradox 自相矛盾

(12) possibility 可能;可能性

(13) reality 真實;現實

注:限定詞主要用a, 有時用no little, 但在nonsense (無意義的話;胡話) 之前不用任何限定詞。例如:It’s absolute nonsense that we don’t have policing power.
