◆quarter n.

1. 表示“一刻鐘”，通常要說 a quarter of an hour, 其中的不定冠詞(an)不能省略，也不能只說 a quarter；但是可說a quarter past three(三點過一刻)，a quarter to six(六點差一刻)等，且這類表達中的不定冠詞(a)通常可以省略。如：

我們在那兒等了一刻鐘。

正：We waited there for a quarter of an hour.

誤：He stood there for a quarter (of hour).

我們是六點一刻出發的。

正：We started at a quarter to six.

正：We started at quarter to six.

2. 通常不說 a quarter hour, 但卻可說：

a quarter mile (=a quarter of a mile) 四分之一英里

a quarter century (=a quarter of a century) 四分之一世紀

◆quite adv.

1. 表示“頗”或“相當”，通常可用于修飾：

(1) 形容詞、副詞。如：

It’s quite interesting. 它相當有趣。

He plays quite well. 他表演得相當不錯。

注：通常不用來修飾形容詞或副詞的比較級，也不修飾副詞 too(太)，唯一的例外可能是 quite better(身體好)。

(2) 某些動詞。如：

I quite agree with you. 我完全同意你。

She quite likes him, but not enough to marry him. 她相當喜歡他，但還沒有到愿嫁給他的程度。

2. 與“冠詞＋形容詞＋名詞”連用時，通常置于冠詞之前，有時也可放在冠詞之后。如：

It’s quite a difficult book. /It’s a quite difficult book.

那是一本相當難的書。

注：若該結構不出現形容詞，則 quite 只能出現在冠詞之前。如：

He is quite a fool. 他是一個大笨蛋。

3. 修飾不可分級的形容詞(如：right, wrong, ready, full, empty, perfect, impossible, alone, unique等，表示“完全”。如：

You’re quite right (wrong). 你完全正確(錯了)。

That’s quite impossible. 那完全不可能。

◆radio n.

1. 表示“收音機”，是可數名詞，復數是 radios。如：

Radios are sold over there. 收音機在那兒出售。

2. 注意以下兩句因搭配的介詞不同，冠詞使用也不同：

The police are talking to each other by radio. 警察在通過無線電談話。

He heard the news on [over] the radio. 他從無線電廣播中聽到這個消息。

◆rain n. & v.

1. 用作名詞，表示“雨”，通常是不可數名詞，表示泛指意義時不用任何冠詞；但表特指意義時，可用定冠詞；表示某種狀形式的雨(通常有定語修飾)，可用不定冠詞。如：

The crops need rain. 莊稼需要雨水。

Has the rain stopped yet? 雨停了嗎?

There was a heavy rain last night. 昨晚下了場大雨。

注：表示“大陣雨”、“雨季”時，可用復數形式。如：

The river rises after heavy rains. 河水在暴雨后上漲。
