number n.

1. 表示“號碼”,可縮略為 No. (有時可省略不用),這類結(jié)構(gòu)通常不用冠詞:Room (number) 105(105號房)Bus (No. ) 16 16 ( 路公共汽車)question number 4 (第四個問題)live at (No. ) 35 York Rd, London(住在倫敦約克路35)

如:No. 17 Platform (17號站臺)No. 1 Middle School(第一中學(xué))

如:Platform No. 16 No. 16 Platform (16號站臺)

如:a number 9 shoe (9號鞋)a number 25 bus (25路公共汽車)the Number 10 trolley bus(10路電車)

2. 表示“數(shù)目”或“數(shù)量”,要注意區(qū)別:a number of the number of, 前者意為“許多”、“若干”等,number 前可用 good, great, large, small 等詞修飾,其后必須接可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù)形式,用作主語時,謂語動詞也用復(fù)數(shù);后者意為“……

A large number of young people like this song.

The number of workers in this factory is small.

The number of people invited was fifty, but a number of them were absent for different reasons.

object v.

My parents objected that I married her.

正:My parents objected to my marrying her.

He objected that he was treated like a child.

正:He objected to being treated like a child.

He objected to my not being careful enough.

正:He objected that I was not careful enough.

She objected to his being too young for the job.

正:She objected that he was too young for the job.

oblige v.

The police obliged them to leave.

We were obliged to be more strict with them.

She obliged us with a song.

Please oblige me by keeping quiet during the lecture.

I’m obliged to you for your good opinion.

即:Much obliged. 非常感謝(=I’m much obliged to you)
