(1) by means of 意為“依靠”、“通過”。如：
He made a fortune by means of industry. 他靠勤勞致富。
He got into the house by means of an open window. 他從一扇開著的窗戶爬進屋去。
(2) by all means 意為“一定要”、“當然可以”。如：
A：Can I have a look at it? 我可以看看嗎?
B：By all means. 當然可以。
(3) by no means 意為“絕不”、“一點也不”(用于句首，句子要倒裝)。如：
I’m by no means happy about his work. 我對他的工作一點也不滿意。
By no means should he be left alone. 絕不能把他單獨留下。
◆medicine n.
表示“藥”，尤指內服藥。通常為不可數名詞，但指種類時，可用作可數名詞。表示吃藥或服藥，通常用動詞 take。如：
The cough will pass away without medicine. 這種咳嗽不服藥也會好的。
She has taken a lot of different medicines, but none have
cured her disease. 她已服用了許多藥，但沒有一種藥能治好她的藥。
注：表示“治……的藥”，一般用介詞 for。如：(www.52ysedu.com)
It’s a good medicine for cough. 這是一種治咳嗽的良藥。
There’s no medicine for curing a fool. 沒有治傻瓜的藥。
◆meeting n.
1. 表示“會議”、“集會”，是可數名詞。表示“在會上”，通常用介詞 at, 有時也用介詞 in。如：
Were you at the meeting last Sunday? 你參加了上周星期日的會議嗎?
She is in a meeting at the moment. 此刻她正在開會。
He said it in [at] an open meeting. 這是他在一次公開會議 上說的。
2. 一般不用來表示“晚會”。如：
孩子們在晚會上玩得很開心。
正：The children had a good time at the party.
誤：The children had a good time at the evening meeting.
◆memory n.
1. 表示“記憶(力)”，若指具體某人的記憶(力)，通常為可數名詞，若指抽象意義的記憶(力)，通常為不可數名詞。如：
The boy has a good (bad) memory. 這孩子記憶力好(不好)。
Memory is a quality which is not highly developed inmost animals. 記憶這種特性在大多數動物身上都不發達。
注：表示“對……的記憶”，一般用介詞 for。如：
John has a good memory for names (faces, figures). 約翰對人的名字(面孔，數字)有很好的記憶力。
2. 注意正確理解以下各句。如：
His name escaped my memory. 他的名字我記不起了。
If my memory serves me right (=If my memory doesn’t failme)，he is 55 years old this year. 如果我沒記錯的話，他今年55歲了。
3. 用于 in memory of, 意為“為了紀念”(注意不用冠詞)。如：
They’re going to erect a monument in memory of the dead. 他們打算樹碑紀念死者。
