◆last v.

用作動詞，表示“持續”，是不及物動詞，其后常接表示時間的名詞或副詞(主要是 long)；后接名詞時根據情況可用介詞 for(可省去)，till, until, into, from……to 等。如：

The war lasted (for) five years. 戰爭打了五年。

The hot weather will last until September. 炎熱的天氣將會一直持續到九月。

有時可用人作主語。如：

He won’t last long in that job — it’s too tough. 他做那工作堅持不了多久 — 那工作太難了。

有時表示“夠用(多久)”或“用了(多久)”，此時可帶一個間接賓語，但不用于被動語態。如：

The food will last (us) (for) three days. 這食物可以供(我們)吃三天。

Will the petrol last (out) till we reach London? 我們的汽油夠開到倫敦嗎?

◆late adj. & adv.

1. 表示“遲”、“晚”，可用作形容詞和副詞。如：

Nobody was late. 沒有人遲到。

Mr Smith married late. 史密斯先生結婚很晚。

He came in the late afternoon [late in the afternoon]. 他傍晚才來。

注：不要認為 lately 是 late 的副詞形式。

2. 用于 be late (in) doing sth 或 be late with sth, 意為“做某事做晚了或做遲了”。如：

He was late (in) getting up this morning. 今天早上他起床起得遲。

We were late with lunch [in having lunch] today. 我們今天午飯吃得遲。

比較：be late for 意為“做……遲到”。如：

He’s never late for work (school). 他上班(上學)從不遲到。

3. 表示遲到多久，一般用“一段時間＋late”。如：

She was five minutes late. 她遲到5分鐘。

The train arrived five minutes late. 火車晚點5分鐘。

◆later adv.

1. 用作形容詞和副詞 late 的比較級。如：

He came later than usual. 他比平常來得晚。

Let’s take a later train. 我們搭晚一點的火車吧。

2. 用于一段具體時間之后，表示從過去或將來算起的多長時間以后，但通常不指從現在算起的多久以后。如：

誤：I’ll call again a week later. (可改為……in a week)

正：I called again a week later. 一周后我又打了電話。

正：I’ll call her on March 5 and will call again a week later. 我將在3月5日給她打個電話，過一周后我將再打個電 話。

但是 later單獨使用(即不連用具體時間)，可以表示從現在算起的“以后”(具有泛指意義)。如：

See you later. 再見。

I’ll tell you all about it later. 以后我把這一切都告訴你。
