1. 表示“頭腦”、“腦子”，通常是不可數名詞，有時用作可數名詞，但通常用復數形式。如：
He has (a) good brain. 他很有頭腦。
Use your brain(s). 動動腦筋吧。
He hasn’t got much brain(s). 他沒什么頭腦。
注：可說 little brains 或 much brains, 但是通常不說 fewbrains, many brains。
2. 表示“極聰明的人”、“智者”，是可數名詞。如：
Some of the best brains in the country are working here.
國內一些最有聰明才智的人都在這兒工作。
◆brave adj.
表示“勇敢的”、“英勇的”。比較以下句型：
你那樣做真是很勇敢。
正：You were brave to do so.
正：It was brave of you to do so.
誤：It was brave for you to do so.
◆burned & burnt v.
1. 在美國英語中，動詞 burn 為規則動詞，其過去式和過去分詞均為 burned；在英國英語中，動詞 burn可以是規則的也可以是不規則的(即可用 burned 和 burnt)。所以當不考慮英國英語與美國英語的差別時，兩者形式常可混用。如：
He burned [burnt] the old letters. 他把舊信燒掉了。
The house was burned [burnt] to the ground. 房子被燒成了灰燼。
注：無論在英國英語還是美國英語中，用于名詞前作定語時通常都用 burnt。如：
burnt sugar 燒焦的糖burnt fingers 燒傷的手指
A burnt child dreads the fire. 燒傷過的孩子怕火(一朝被蛇咬，十年怕草繩)。
2. 以上區別也適合于以下各組詞：learned / learnt, spoiled/spoilt, smelled/smelt, dreamed/dreamt, spelled/spelt 等。如：
He learned [learnt] the poem at school. 他在學校學過那首詩。
I dreamed [dreamt] about flying last night. 昨晚我夢見我在飛翔。
注：作定語時通常都用不規則形式。如：
a spoilt child 寵壞的孩子 spilt milk 潑灑的牛奶
a misspelt word 拼錯的單詞 等
特例：learned men 學者
◆bus n.
1. 表示“乘公共汽車”，可根據情況有多種表達。如：
他乘公共汽車去上學。
正：He goes to school by bus.
正：He goes to school on [in] a bus.
正：He takes a bus to school.
2. 表示幾路公共汽車，也可用多種表達，如“16路公共汽車”可表達為：Bus No. 16 / the No 16 bus / Bus 16 / the 16 bus
3. 漢語的“換車”，英語用 change buses 表示(bus 一定要用復數，其前不用限定詞)。如：
You’d have to change buses at least twice. 你至少要換兩次車。
◆busy adj.
比較以下正誤句型：
他非常忙。
正：He is very busy. / He is as busy as a bee.
誤：He is as busy as a horse [cow, fish, bird, etc].
他在忙于寫一本小說。
正：He is busy writing a novel.
誤：He is busy to write a novel.
你工作忙嗎?
正：Are you busy (with your work)?
誤：Is your work busy?
◆buy v.
1. 用作動詞，表示“買”，可帶雙賓語；若雙賓易位，通常要用介詞 for。如：
我叔叔為我買了本英語詞典。
正：My uncle bought me an English dictionary.
正：My uncle bought an English dictionary for me.
