sleep late的意思是“睡得晚”嗎

經常看到學生將 sleep late 翻譯成“睡得晚”，但有趣的是，有些詞典也將 sleep late 翻譯成“睡得晚”。如：

I sleep late on Saturdays. 周六我睡得很晚。（《韋氏高階英語詞典》中國大百科全書出版社翻譯出版，第2489頁）

I usually sleep late on Sundays. 星期天我通常睡得很晚。（《（新版）朗文高階英漢雙解詞典》late詞條，第1283頁，外語教學與研究出版社翻譯出版）

很顯然，上面這兩句都是對 sleep late 的誤譯。其實 sleep 指的是“處于睡眠的狀態”，《劍橋高階》對動詞 sleep 的解釋是 to be in the state of rest when your eyes are closed, your body is not active, and your mind is unconscious，所以 sleep late 的實際意思是“睡眠的狀態持續到很晚的時候”，也就是說它表示的不是“睡得晚”，而是“起得晚”或“睡懶覺”。比如：

sleep late ( = not get up until late in the morning) 睡懶覺（《朗文當代英語辭典》4版）

We sometimes sleep late at the weekends (= until late in the morning). 周末我們有時候睡懶覺。（《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》第8版）

If you’re tired, why don’t you sleep late (=sleep until late in the morning) tomorrow? 如果你累了，明天為什么不晚點起床啊？《朗文中階英漢雙解詞典》（第4版)

若要表示“睡得晚”“睡得遲”，可用stay up late, go to bed late, go to sleep late等。如：

I went to bed later than usual. 我比往常睡得晚。

She goes to bed late and gets up late.  她睡得晚，起得也晚。

Staying up late will do harm to your health. 睡得晚對身體有害。

I stayed up late last night so I am kind of tired. 昨晚上我睡得晚，現在有點累。

If I go to bed late, I find it hard to get up in the morning. 我要是睡得晚，我就發現早晨很難起床。
