比較級前面的冠詞使用問題

在通常情況下，英語的比較級前不用冠詞。如：

A dog is usually bigger than a cat. 狗一般比貓要大。

Any changes would be very difficult to make so it’s better to leave well alone. 做任何改動都很困難，還是見好就收吧。

但是，在某些特殊情況下，有時也用冠詞，具體說來，要注意以下幾點：

1. 當比較級后接名詞時，比較級前可能用冠詞，此時的冠詞不是修飾比較級，而是修飾其后的名詞。如：

He emigrated to Brazil in search of a better life. 他為尋求更好的生活，移民到巴西。

They stood on tiptoe to get a better look at the parade. 他們踮起腳以便把游行場面看得更清楚些。

He is changing his job because he wants a bigger income. 他在調換工作因為他想增加收入。

I couldn’t have got to the meeting on time—unless I had caught an earlier train. 我不可能及時趕到會場，除非我趕上了較早一班火車。

但是，若受比較級修飾的名詞為表泛指的復數名詞或不可數名詞，則仍不用冠詞。如：

Please devote more time to your work. 請在工作上多花點時間。

In the past, people had fewer expectations. 過去，人們的希求要少一些。

The manager listened to the worker’s demand for more money. 經理聽取了工人們關于提高工錢的要求。

2. 當要特指兩者中“較(更)……”時，比較級前通常要帶定冠詞，此時可視為比較級后省略了有關的名詞或代詞one，即定冠詞實為修飾被省略的名詞或代詞one。如：

the elder of the two brothers 兩兄弟中年紀大的一個

Which of the two methods is the better? 這兩種方法哪一種更好?

Of the two coats, the black one is the better. 在這兩件外套中，這件黑色的更好些。

3. 在比較級前用the表示程度(通常有表示原因、理由或條件的短語或從句)。如：

If that is the case, all the better. 如果事實是那樣，那就更好了。

I feel all the better for that swim. 游泳之后，我感覺更舒服了。

4. 用于“the+比較級，the+比較級”，表示“越……越……”。如：

The more you eat, the fatter you get. 吃得越多，身體越胖。

The more I see of him, the less I like him. 我越是見他，越是不喜歡他。

The more expensive petrol becomes, the less people drive. 汽油越貴，開車的人就越少。

The more you know, the more you’ll realize how little you know. 你知道得越多，你就越會體會到你知道得那么有限。

5. 當by far用于修飾比較級且置于其前時，比較級前要用the。如：

It’s quicker by far to go by train. 坐火車去要快得多。

This applicant is by far the better than that one. 這個申請者遠比那一個好。

注：與比較級連用，通常要放在比較級之后，若放在比較級前，則比較級通常應帶有冠詞。如：

He is cleverer by far than her.

It’s by far the quicker to go by train.
