6. even [much, still] less

表示“更不用說(shuō)”“更何況”。如：

He can hardly afford beer, much less champagne. 他連啤酒都喝不起，更不用說(shuō)喝香檳了。

He's too shy to ask a stranger the time, still less speak to a room full of people. 他連向陌生人打聽(tīng)時(shí)間都不好意思，更不用說(shuō)向一屋子人講話(huà)了

注意不要將該固定短語(yǔ)與自由搭配的短語(yǔ)相混淆——作為非固定短語(yǔ)理解的even [much, still] less 的意思是“更少”“更不”。如：

He’s eating even less than usual. 他吃得甚至比平時(shí)還少。

He thought he knew better than I did, though he was much less experienced. 他認(rèn)為他比我更懂，雖然他的經(jīng)驗(yàn)遠(yuǎn)不如我。

7. none the less

該短語(yǔ)的意思是“盡管如此”“依然”“然而”。如：

It’s not cheap but I think we should buy it none the less. 這個(gè)雖然不便宜, 但我覺(jué)得我們還是應(yīng)該買(mǎi)。

該短語(yǔ)也可寫(xiě)成nonetheless或nevertheless。如：

Though very intelligent, she is nevertheless rather modest. 她很聰明，倒也很謙虛。

The soldiers were cold, tired, and hungry; nonetheless, they continued to march. 戰(zhàn)士們又冷、又累、又餓，然而他們?nèi)匀焕^續(xù)行軍。

8. the less…the less…

the less…the less… 用于表示比例，其意為“越……就越不……”。如：

The less efforts you make, the less progress you achieve. 你付出的努力越少，你的進(jìn)步也就越少。

但更多情況是，只出現(xiàn)一個(gè)the less，另一個(gè)the less用其他形式的比較級(jí)代替。如：

The less said about the whole thing, the happier I’ll be. 對(duì)整件事談得越少我越高興。

Sometimes it seems like the less I do, the more tired I feel. 有時(shí)我感覺(jué)好像活干得越少越覺(jué)得累。

The more fruit and vegetables you eat, the less chance you have of getting cancer. 吃的蔬菜、水果越多，得癌癥的可能性就越少。
