They live up the hill. 他們住在山上。

His office is up the stairs. 他的辦公室在樓上。

(2) 表示動態意義，down 指“沿著……往下(或往遠處)”；up表示“沿著……往上(或往近處)”。如：

Tears ran down her face. 眼淚順著她的臉流了下來。

The boy climbed up (down) the tree. 這男孩爬上(下)樹。

I carried the bag up (down) the stairs. 我把袋子扛上(下)了樓梯。

比較以下正誤句型:

他下了梯子。

正：He got down the ladder.

誤：He got down the horse. (一個人不可能“沿馬而下”)

比較：He got down from the horse. 他從馬上跳下來。

他爬上了屋頂

正：He climbed up on the roof.

正：He climbed up to the roof.

誤：He climbed up the roof. (此句的意思是:沿著屋頂往上爬，不合邏輯)

比較：He climbed up the hill. 他爬上山(即沿著山往上爬)。

◆downstairs & upstairs adv.

1. 用作副詞時，兩者除可用作狀語外，還可用作表語或放在名詞后作定語。如：

He lives downstairs (upstairs). 他住在樓下(上)。

Is anyone downstairs (upstairs)? 樓下(上)有人嗎?

Our neighbours downstairs (upstairs) are very noisy. 我們樓下(上)的鄰居很吵鬧。

2. 用作形容詞時，只能放在名詞前作定語。如：

The downstairs (upstairs) rooms are already full ofpeople. 樓上的房間已住滿了人。

注：由于 downstairs 用作副詞時要放在名詞后作定語，而用作形容詞時要放在名詞前作定語，所以類似“樓上(下) 的廁所”這樣的表達可有兩種譯法：the upstairs toilets /the toilets upstairs

3. 兩者都可用作名詞。如：

The downstairs (upstairs) isn’t inhabited. 樓下(樓上) 還沒有人住。

We haven’t painted the downstairs (upstairs) yet. 我們還沒有給樓下(上)的房間刷漆。

注：雖然可用作名詞，但其前不能用 in, at, to 之類的介詞:

他們在樓下(上)等你。

正：They’re waiting for you downstairs (upstairs).

誤：They’re waiting for you at downstairs (upstairs).
