1. 表示圖書、文章、講話、節(jié)目等的具體“內(nèi)容”時，通常要用復(fù)數(shù)形式。如：

The contents of the telegram are as follows. 電報內(nèi)容如下。

The contents of the document remain secret. 文件的內(nèi)容仍然保密。

但是，若指抽象意義的內(nèi)容（如側(cè)重指主題或主要內(nèi)容），則為不可數(shù)名詞。如：

The teacher returned his paper and said the content was very interesting. 教師還給他論文，說論文內(nèi)容很有意思。

The content of your essay is excellent, but it’s not very well expressed. 你那篇文章的內(nèi)容好極了，但是表達方式不太好。

2. 若指具體所容納的東西或所含的東西，通常用復(fù)數(shù)形式。如：

He checked the contents of the package carefully. 他仔細地查看了包裹里的東西。

The entire contents of the house were put up for auction. 房子里的所有東西都被拿去拍賣了。

He emptied out the contents of his pockets onto the table. 他把口袋里的東西全部倒在桌上。

3. 表示“含量”“容量”，通常用單數(shù)形式（且通常置名詞之后）。如：

Oranges have a high vitamin C content. 橙子的維生素C含量很高。

Don’t eat food with a high fat content. 不要吃脂肪含量高的食物。

Most soft drinks have a high sugar content. 大多數(shù)軟飲料的含糖量都很高。  

4. 表示“目錄”時，總是用復(fù)數(shù)形式。如：

I can’t find it in the contents. 我在目錄里找不到它。

Look up the contents at the beginning of the book. 查一下卷首的目錄。

即使用于名詞前作定語也要用復(fù)數(shù)。如：

the contents page 目錄頁

有時，甚至還可與不定冠詞連用。如：

Is there a contents? 有目錄嗎?

但是a contents更普通的說法是a table of contents。如：

At the front of the book is a table of contents, giving details of what is in the book. 書的前部有目錄，詳列了書中的內(nèi)容。

5. 表示“滿足”“滿意”時，為不可數(shù)名詞，沒有復(fù)數(shù)形式，與contentment同義。但此用法在現(xiàn)代英語中已不多見。如：

His face wore a look of pure content(ment). 他臉上露出了心滿意足的神情。

注意固定搭配do sth to one’s heart’s content（盡情地做某事）。如：

She took refuge in the library, where she could read to her heart’s content. 她躲在圖書館里，在那里她可以盡情地看書。
