一般過(guò)去時(shí)的四種重要用法

 

用法一:基本用法

一般過(guò)去時(shí)由動(dòng)詞的過(guò)去式構(gòu)成。主要表示在過(guò)去某個(gè)時(shí)間所發(fā)生的動(dòng)作或存在的狀態(tài),常與when, then, at that time, just now, a moment ago, three days ago, last year, yesterday, in 2006等連用,但更多地是通過(guò)上下文來(lái)表明時(shí)間。如

They gave it to me just now. 這是他們剛才給我的。

He left for New York a week ago. 他一周以前動(dòng)身去了紐約。

We spent three days in sightseeing. 我們花了三天時(shí)間觀光游覽。

She lived a long life and died a natural death. 她活了很長(zhǎng),無(wú)疾而終。

用法二:表示過(guò)去的習(xí)慣

一般過(guò)去時(shí)也與used to一樣,可以表示在過(guò)去一段時(shí)間內(nèi)的經(jīng)常性或習(xí)慣性動(dòng)作。如:

She came to see us every day. 她每天都來(lái)看我們。

I smoked forty cigarettes a day till I gave up. 我戒煙前一天要抽40支煙。

用法三:表示“本想”

think, mean等表示“想法”的動(dòng)詞的過(guò)去時(shí)有時(shí)可以表示過(guò)去未曾實(shí)現(xiàn)的想法,通常譯為“本想”。如:

We thought to return early. 我們本想早點(diǎn)回來(lái)的。

I meant to get up early, but forgot to set the alarm. 我本想要早起,但忘記了上鬧鐘。

I wanted to see the exhibition but the queue put me off.  我本想去看展覽會(huì),但是排隊(duì)的人太多,使我不想看了。

注:更多的時(shí)候是用過(guò)去完成時(shí)表示以上用法。如:

I had meant to come, but something happened. 我本想來(lái),但有事就沒(méi)有來(lái)。

I had intended to speak, but time did not permit. 我本想發(fā)言,可是時(shí)間不允許。

用法四:用于揭示真相

在特定語(yǔ)境中,當(dāng)要揭示某情況的真相時(shí),我們習(xí)慣上要用一般過(guò)去時(shí)。如

It’s not as big as I expected. 那東西不像我預(yù)料的那么大。(不能說(shuō):... as I have expected.)

You’re older than I thought. 你的歲數(shù)比我想的要大一些。(不能說(shuō):…than I have thought.)

You won’t come? But you promised! 你不會(huì)來(lái)了?可是你答應(yīng)過(guò)要來(lái)的呀!(不能說(shuō):But you have promised!)
