一、概述
情態(tài)動詞，也叫情態(tài)助動詞，主要用于表示說話人對所說話語的態(tài)度和看法。初中英語中學(xué)的情態(tài)動詞不多，主要有can / could, may / might, should, need等。
從語法上看，情態(tài)動詞具有以下特點(diǎn)：必須接動詞原形，并與后面的動詞原形一起構(gòu)成謂語；沒有人稱和數(shù)的變化，即第三人稱單數(shù)不加s；構(gòu)成否定式時(shí)可以直接在其后加not。如：
In future I must do better than that. 今后我一定干得比這好。
You needn’t do all these exercises. 你不需要做所有這些練習(xí)。
She can sing this song in French. 她能用法語唱這支歌。
She might be able to help us. 她有可能幫我們的忙。
You may bring them back on Monday. 你可以星期一把它們送回來。
You should think before doing that. 在這樣做之前你要想一想。
二、考點(diǎn)歸納
考點(diǎn)1 考查以must開頭的疑問的回答
對于以must開頭的一般疑問句，其肯定回答可以直接使用must，但其否定回答則不能使用mustn’t，而是習(xí)慣上用needn’t或don’t have to。如：
—Must we leave so soon? 我們必須這么早走嗎?
—Yes, we must. 必須這么早走。(ask.yygrammar.com)
—Must I come at four o’clock? 我一定要在四點(diǎn)鐘來嗎?
—Oh no, you needn’t come at four. 啊不，你不必在四點(diǎn)鐘來。
【考例1】—Must I finish watering the flowers now?
—No, you ________. (江蘇宿遷中考題)
A. must B. won’t C. needn’t D. can’t
【分析】答案選C。回答must開頭的疑問句，習(xí)慣上要用needn’t可don’t have to，故選C。
【考例2】—Must he finish the work before supper?
—No, he ________. He ________ finish it after supper. (北京朝陽區(qū)中考題)
A. mustn’t; may B. needn’t; can C. need; can D. must; may
【分析】答案選B。用must開頭的疑問句，其否定回答英語習(xí)慣上要用needn’t；由此可排除A、C和D。
考點(diǎn)2 考查must表示肯定推測的用法
對于很有把握的肯定推測，相當(dāng)于漢語的“一定”“肯定”時(shí)，英語習(xí)慣上用情態(tài)動詞must；此時(shí)的must后通常接的動詞通常是be，有時(shí)也可能是have, know等表示狀態(tài)的動詞。如：
You must be careful. 你必須小心。
The book must be very difficult. 這本書一定很難。
The woman must be very rich. 這個(gè)女人一定很有錢。
He must have a lot of friends. 他一定有很多朋友。
She must know your name. 她一定知道你的名字。
【考例1】—Susan has bought a large house with a swimming pool.
—It ________ be very expensive. I never even dream about it. (江西中考題)
A. must B. might C. can’t D. shouldn’t
【分析】答案選A。根據(jù)常識可知要買一個(gè)帶游泳池的大房子“一定”會很貴，所以空格處應(yīng)填表示肯定推測的must（一定）。
【考例2】The yellow coat ________ be Linda’s because nobody likes yellow except her. (福建漳州中考題)
A. can’t B. can C. mustn’t D. must(www.52ysedu.com)
【分析】答案選D。根據(jù)后文because nobody likes yellow except her（因?yàn)槌怂鉀]有喜歡黃顏色）可知，那件黃色上衣“肯定”(must)是她的。
