關(guān)系型“what+名詞”結(jié)構(gòu)是英語中一個(gè)十分有用的結(jié)構(gòu)，也是一個(gè)比較難理解的結(jié)構(gòu)，本文擬對(duì)其用法特點(diǎn)作一探討。

一、該結(jié)構(gòu)的兩個(gè)用法特點(diǎn)

1. 特指性

所謂特指性，即其中的名詞表示特指意義，此時(shí)的what 在用法上大致相當(dāng)于the。如：

I will give you what help I can.

=I will give you the help I can. 我會(huì)盡我的力量幫助你。

What possessions I have are yours.

=The possessions I have are yours. 我所有的財(cái)產(chǎn)都是你的。

注：單獨(dú)使用的what也往往具有特指性，而加了后綴-ever的whatever則往往具有非特指性。如：

I took what was on the kitchen table. 我拿了廚房桌子上的東西。(what=that which)

I’ll send whatever is necessary. 我將寄來所有需要的東西。(whatever= anything that)

2. 微量性

微量性，即指這樣用的what除表示特指外，有時(shí)還含“量不多”之意。將“特指性”和“微量性”結(jié)合起來，該結(jié)構(gòu)的意思就是“雖不多，但全部”，有時(shí)可譯為“僅有”。如：

I gave them what money I had. 我把我僅有的錢都給了他們。

=I gave them the money I had, although I did not have much. 我的錢雖不多， 但我把這些錢都給了他們。

What friends Mary has are out of the country. 瑪麗僅有的幾個(gè)朋友都在國外。

=The few friends Mary has are out of the country. 瑪麗僅有的幾個(gè)朋友都在國外。

He collected what information he could find. 他搜集自己所能找到的僅有的一些信息。

He collected the little information he could find. 他搜集自己所能找到的僅有的一些信息。

注：該結(jié)構(gòu)并不是總具有這種“微量性”，即有時(shí)有，有時(shí)沒有，到底如何理解，視具體語境而定。

二、微量性的明確與強(qiáng)化

上面講到“what+名詞”結(jié)構(gòu)并不是總具有“微量性”，即有時(shí)有，有時(shí)沒有。如果要想明確或強(qiáng)化這種微量性特點(diǎn)，我們可以在該結(jié)構(gòu)的名詞前加上表示微量的修飾語few(用于復(fù)數(shù)名詞前)或little(用于不可數(shù)名詞前)。如：

He spent what little money he had on books. 他把僅有的一點(diǎn)錢都用來買書了。

He spent what little time he had writing novels. 他把僅有的一點(diǎn)時(shí)間都用來寫小說。

What little free time he had was spent with the family. 他僅有的一點(diǎn)空余時(shí)間都是與家人在一起度過的。

What few friends she has are out of the country. 她僅有的幾個(gè)朋友都在國外。

注：由于該結(jié)構(gòu)本身帶有“微量性”的特點(diǎn)，所以它從來就不能與表示“多量”的many, much連用。
