regret的四條考點用法

1. 表示“遺憾”“抱歉”，是及物動詞，不要按漢語意思在其后連用介詞 about 或 for。如：

假若你現在就走，你會后悔的。

誤：If you go now, you will regret about [for] it.

正：If you go now, you will regret it.

2. 表示很遺憾地做某事，其后要接不定式；能這樣用的不定式不多，主要是 to say, to tell, to inform等，此時句子主語一般是第一人稱，且regret通常用現在時。如：

I regret to say that you have failed your exam. 我很遺憾地告訴你，你考試不及格。

We regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you the job. 我們遺憾地通知你，我們沒法給你這份工作。

3. 表示后悔或遺憾做過某事，其后通常接動名詞，且動名詞可用一般式或完成式。如：

He regretted doing [having done] it. 他后悔做了此事。

I regret spending [having spent] so much money. 我很后悔花了這么多錢。

比較下面兩句：

I regret to say that I cannot come. 很抱歉，我不能來了。

I regret saying that I cannot come. 我后悔說過我不能來。

注意，若句中含有具體的過去時間狀語，則以用動名詞的一般式表示已發生的動作。如：

I regret going there yesterday. 我后悔昨天去了那兒。

偶爾也接不定式的完成式表示后悔做過的事，但在現代英語中很不普通。

4. 其后可接 that 從句，比較以下同義句型：

我不能來，覺得很遺憾。

正：I regret being unable to come.

正：I regret that I can’t come.

他后悔說了那樣的話。

正：He regretted having said that.

正：He regretted that he had said that.
