一、late的用法歸納
1. 表示“遲”“晚”，可用作形容詞和副詞。如：
She told me that she would be late. 她告訴我她會(huì)遲到。
He arrived late because of the storm. 因?yàn)楸╋L(fēng)雨他遲到了。
He came in the late afternoon [late in the afternoon]. 他傍晚才來。
注意，不要認(rèn)為 lately 是 late 的副詞形式。
2. 用于 be late (in) doing sth 或 be late with sth, 意為“做某事做晚了或做遲了”。如：
He was late (in) getting up this morning. 今天早上他起床起得遲。
We were late with lunch [in having lunch] today. 我們今天午飯吃得遲。
比較：be late for 意為“做……遲到”。如：
I’ve never been late for work. 我上班從來沒遲到過。
Hurry up, or you’ll be late for school. 趕快，否則你上學(xué)就要遲到了。
3. 表示遲到多久，一般用“一段時(shí)間+late”。如：
The train was five minutes late. 火車晚點(diǎn)了5分鐘。
The bus arrived ten minutes late. 公共汽車遲到了10分鐘。
Bill finally rolled up two hours late. 比爾終于來了，遲到了兩個(gè)小時(shí)。
二、later的用法歸納
1. 用作形容詞和副詞 late 的比較級(jí)。如：
It’s rather later than I thought. 這比我想的還要晚。
He left home later than usual. 他比平常還晚離家。
2. 用于一段具體時(shí)間之后，表示從過去或?qū)硭闫鸬亩嚅L(zhǎng)時(shí)間以后，但通常不指從現(xiàn)在算起的多久以后。如：
誤：I’ll call again a week later.（可改為…in a week）
正：I called again a week later. 一周后我又打了電話。
正：I’ll call her on March 5 and will call again a week later. 我將在3月5日給她打個(gè)電話，過一周后我將再打個(gè)電話。
但是later單獨(dú)使用（即不連用具體時(shí)間），可以表示從現(xiàn)在算起的“以后”（具有泛指意義）。如：
Let’s stop now and finish it later. 現(xiàn)在停下來，以后再完成它。
He may be busy, in which case I’ll call later. 他可能忙，如若如此，我以后再來拜訪。
3. 用于 later on，表示“以后”“后來”，可用于過去或?qū)怼Ｈ纾?SPAN lang=EN-US>
We’ll discuss the matter later on. 我們以后將討論這件事。
Later on he realized his mistake. 后來他認(rèn)識(shí)到了自己的錯(cuò)誤。
4. sooner or later 為習(xí)語，意為“遲早”，注意其詞序不能倒過來。如：
You’ll know the truth sooner or later. 你遲早會(huì)知道真相的。
Sooner or later you’ll have to make a decision. 你早晚得拿個(gè)主意。
