■in brief 簡言之，總之
In brief, it has been an exciting day. 總之，這一天過得很帶勁。
In brief, he was happy with the result. 簡言之，他對這個結(jié)果感到高興。
■in common 共有的，共用的
The two sisters have a bike in common. 倆姐妹共用一輛自行車。
The swimming pool is used in common by all the children. 這個游泳池由所有的孩子共用。
【注】該短語主要用于have sth in common（有共同的某種特點）這一搭配中。如：
We don’t have much in common. 我們沒有多少共同之處。
John and I have nothing in common. 約翰與我沒有共同之處。
Real friends should have everything in common. 真正的朋友應(yīng)該在各方面都有相通之處。
■in earnest 認真的（地），正經(jīng)的（地）
It’s beginning to snow in earnest. 雪真的下起來了。
I’m sure he was in earnest when he said he wanted to marry her. 我相信他說想娶她是真心實意的。
■in full 全部地，全面地，無省略地
Please write your name in full. 請寫出你的全名。
We accomplished the task in full. 我們圓滿地完成了任務(wù)。
■in general一般說來，大體上
In general the plan is good. 總的說來這個計劃是好的。
In general her work has been good, but this essay is dreadful. 總的說來，她的作品不錯，不過這篇文章糟透了。
【注】有時置于名詞之后，表示“大多數(shù)”“多半”。如：
Children in general are fond of candy. 小孩子多半都喜歡吃糖。
People in general don’t do things like that. 人們多半不會那樣做。
■in particular 特別，尤其
Why did you choose that one in particular? 你為什么特別挑選了那一個?
I noticed her eyes in particular, because they were very large. 我特別注意到了她的眼睛，因為她的眼睛很大。
■in private 私下地，秘密地
She asked to see him in private. 她請求單獨與他見面。

■in public 公開地，當眾
He is nervous in public. 他在公開場合很緊張。
Such things mustn’t be discussed in public. 這種事不可在公眾場合討論。
■in secret 秘密地，偷偷地(www.52ysedu.com)
I was told about it in secret. 有人偷偷地告訴了我。
The negotiations were conducted in secret. 談判是秘密進行的。
【注】該短語主要起副詞作用，在句中用作狀語，而帶有定冠詞的in the secret（知道秘密的，了解內(nèi)情的）則主要起形容詞作用。如：
Is he in the secret? 他知道內(nèi)情嗎?
■in short 總之，簡言之：
In short, he is a cheat. 總之，他是個騙子。
In short, the dictionary is very useful. 總之，這本字典很有用。
■in vain 徒然地（的），無結(jié)果地（的）
We protested in vain. 我們抗議無效。
