---Is there a movie on in the cinema tonight?
---There ________ be. I’ll phone the cinema and find it out.
從對話的內容來看，答語應當是一個表推測性的情態動詞，意為“可能有電影在上演。”英語的may和can都可以表示“可能性推測”， 但may一般用于陳述句（肯定或否定均可），不用于疑問句。表示主觀推測時，can一般用于否定句和疑問句，不用于肯定句中。所以，應該說There may be. 請比較：
A: Who is standing over there? 是誰站在那兒?
B: I can’t say it must be Tom, but it may be Tom. 我不能說那一定是湯姆，但可能是湯姆。（不說：but it can be Tom.）
C: Can it be Tom? 可能是湯姆嗎？（不說：May it be Tom?）
D: No, it can’t be Tom. He is in the classroom now. 不，不可能是他。他現在正在教室里呢。（比較：No, it may not be Tom.不是吧，那可能不是湯姆。）
特別提示：
It must be Tom. 是一種十分肯定的推測（“一定是”）；
It may be Tom. 是一種不確定的推測（“可能是”）；
It may not be Tom. 也是一種不確定的推測（“可能不是”）；
It can’t be Tom. 是完全否定的推測（“不可能是”）。
【問題三】When I was studying at Beijing University, I would take a walk along the lake
本題為何用would，它不是will的過去式表將來嗎？還有，表示過去的動作或行為時，would跟used to有何區別？
would除了表示過去將來時外，還有一個特殊的用法，就是表示“過去經常性、習慣性的動作”。句子意思是：在北京大學學習期間，我常常（往往）在晚上都沿著湖邊散步。
又如：The old lady would often give me something to eat when I was in the countryside.我在鄉下時，那位老太太常常給我吃的東西。
used to也有“過去常常“之意，表示過去有規律的習慣或過去某一時期的狀況，但現在并不如此了。它可以與表示過去的時間狀語連用。
She doesn't get up early as she used to.她不像以前起得那么早了。
There used to be a temple here.從前這里有一座廟。
used to可表示過去經常發生的動作或存在的狀態，表示“過去如此，現在已不再這樣了”的含義，強調今昔對比；而would僅表示過去習慣性或重復性的動作，與現在無關。
People used to believe that the sun moved round the earth.過去人們認為太陽繞著地球轉。（不用would）
He would sit in the yard listening to the radio every evening.每天晚上他都會坐在院子里聽收音機。（表示過去重復性的動作，他現在是否如此，不得而知）
used to不能跟表示“明確的時間段狀語”連用。
不可說：He used to work here for twenty years. (www.52ysedu.com)
used to可用于無人稱句和存在句，而would則不可以。
There used to be a big tree in front of the classroom.過去教室前面有一棵大樹。
It used to be said that she was a beauty.過去人們常說她是個美人。
