一、be late (in) doing sth 與 be late with sth
英語中be late (in) doing sth 與 be late with sth 同義，表示“做某事做晚了或做遲了”。如：
He was late (in) getting up this morning. 今天早上他起床起得遲。
The BBC are not often late with the news. 英國廣播公司通常能及時播報新聞。
There is a charge of ￡50 if you are over a week late with your payment. 如果你的付款拖延超過一周就要多付50英鎊。
比較同義句：
1. 我們今天午飯吃得遲。
We had a late lunch today.
We were late with lunch today.
=We were late (in) having lunch today.
2. 他沒有及時付款。
He made a late payment.
= He was late with his payment.
= He was late (in) paying.
二、be late for sth
be later for sth 表示“做……遲到”，即遲于預定的時間或遲于規定時間。如：
I’ve never been late for work. 我上班從來沒遲到過。
Hurry up, or you’ll be late for school. 趕快，否則你上學就要遲到了。
I was late for the train so I had to run. 我要趕不上火車了，所以得跑著去。
I was late for work again this morning my boss is after my blood. 今早我上班又遲到了——老板要找我麻煩了。
She blotted her copy-book by being an hour late for work. 她上班遲到了一小時，破壞了以往的良好形象。
