(4) peculiar  奇怪的;異常的

(5) strange 不尋常的;不可思議的

5.2.8  “It+動(dòng)詞+介詞短語+ that從句  例如:

(1) It is to his credit that the bitterness he felt over hid recent failure did not alter his determination to carry out his regimental duties to perfection.

(2) It came as little surprise that the twelve ministers found much to criticise in the reform proposals.

(3) It came to light that the plane had not been insured.

(4) It counts as an achievement that he was able to resign.

(5) It’s hard to say at first why Ed is so remarkable but then it creeps on you that this is top-quality song-writing.

(6) It goes without saying that most gardeners love the outdoor life.

(7) Since alcohol is drying, it stands to reason that those products marketed for women with dry skin have little or not alcohol.

 

5.2.9  “It+動(dòng)詞+ that從句

1. THE “EMERGE” GROUP

These verbs indicate that something happens or becomes known, or that something is logically the case. With some verbs the word that is often omitted, as in It happened I was there at the time.

(1) It never really clicked that I was homeless until I had on the street a couple of months.

(2) I imagine there was much discussion on this and then it came about that the film did not include the beheading.

(3) Twelve years later, it came out that Flood’s murder was a mistake; he had been innocent.

(4) Then it emerged that they spent half their days working in the fields and the other half was spent in laborious household chores carried out without any running water.

(5) It figured that the most real-life twins could do was wear the same-size pants.

(6) It followed that the problem of independence should be solved by particular territories before any attempt could be made to establish a voluntary federation of West African states.

(7) When it got around that Bickford was looking for a sprint car for his 13-year-old son, the phrase child abuse was spoken, loud and often and without sarcasm.

(8) He had known from the moment it happened that he wanted revenge.

(9) Earlier in the week, it had leaked out that Mr. Rabin and Mr. Arafat would win.

(10) When it transpired that the meatballs were also not in other places accessible to mortals, everyone clearly realized what they had in any case already suspected.

(11) It turned out that all of them adopted the official Malay place-names.

2. THE “APPEAR” GROUP

These verbs are concerned with what a situation is, or seems to be.

(1) They are all link verbs. The word that is often omitted, as in It seems you understand me.

(2) A police spokesman said it appeared that the bag had contained two tubes filled with pieces of lead which flew into the air injuring the eleven people.

(3) He was to be a priest, so, she thought it could not be that he was interested in her.

3. THE “HURT” GROUP

These verbs indicate how someone feels about the event indicated by the that-clause.

(1) Hundreds of people attended the wake and funeral. It helped that so many people cared. I felt stronger when people were around.

(2) I have been wanting to write to you since day one. It hurts that you cannot se e this.

(3) The bigger the cost, the more it matters that the money should not be wasted.

(4) Still, it rankles that he doesn’t get cast on U.S. stages.

注:根據(jù)潘歡懷教授所著得《現(xiàn)代英語實(shí)用句法》(北京師范大學(xué)出版社 19849月第1) P544和萬清新的《關(guān)于it的某些用法的質(zhì)疑與商榷》(煙臺(tái)師院學(xué)報(bào) 1986年第1) P58 “It +seem (appear, look, happen, turn out) +that 從句中的it無人稱”it,因?yàn)檫@些句子和以先行”it為主語的句子是不同的,在先行”it位主語的句子里, that從句時(shí)句子的真正主語,可以放在句首。但以無人稱”it為主語的句子卻不能那樣顛倒語序。這些句子中的that從句不是句子真正的主語。如不能說: That he is always correct seems.

根據(jù)這種句型結(jié)構(gòu)來看,這些that從句是作為主語補(bǔ)語的名詞從句,因?yàn)?/FONT>seem, appear等是一種系詞。根據(jù)句子內(nèi)容來看,that從句所表達(dá)的是整個(gè)句子的主要內(nèi)容。

 

5.2.10  主語從句不可位于句首的情況

1.“It is +過去分詞 +that從句中的主語從句不可提前

2.“It+不及物動(dòng)詞+that從句中的主語從句不可提前

3.含主語從句的復(fù)合句時(shí)疑問句時(shí),主語從句不可提前

注:有時(shí),that引導(dǎo)的主語從句只能放在主語的位置,而不能用it作形式主語,把真正的主語that從句后置,例如,張道真編著的《英語語法大全下(外語教學(xué)與研究出版社19988月第1) P22: That he had succeeded pleased me very much. 就不能轉(zhuǎn)化為﹡It pleased me very much that he had succeeded.
