有網(wǎng)友問(wèn)：英語(yǔ)的情態(tài)動(dòng)詞有過(guò)去式嗎？回答如下：
▲有些情態(tài)動(dòng)詞有過(guò)去式，有些沒(méi)有。比如can的過(guò)去式為could，may的過(guò)去式為might，will的過(guò)去式為would，等等。比較：
He can finish the work in time. 他可以按時(shí)完成工作。
He said that he could finish the work in time. 他說(shuō)他可以按時(shí)完成工作。
注意，情態(tài)動(dòng)詞的過(guò)去式有時(shí)可能并不表示過(guò)去，而只是表示一種特定的語(yǔ)氣（如使委婉等）。如：
Might I come in? 我可以進(jìn)來(lái)嗎？（比用May I…更委婉）
He couldn’t be right. 他不可能是對(duì)的。（比用can’t…更委婉）
▲從形式上看，should是shall的過(guò)去式，但它本身通常當(dāng)作現(xiàn)在式用。如：
You should ask for the bill. 你應(yīng)該要賬單。
We should take good care of the children. 我們應(yīng)該好好照看這些孩子。
▲有些情態(tài)動(dòng)詞通常沒(méi)有過(guò)去式，如 must, need, ought to等。比較：
He must leave today. 他必須今天離開。
The boss said that he must leave today. 老板說(shuō)他必須今天離開。
不過(guò)，must的過(guò)去式有時(shí)可用had to來(lái)代替。如：
The boss said that he had to leave today. 老板說(shuō)他必須今天離開。
▲dare用作情態(tài)動(dòng)詞時(shí)可以有過(guò)去式，但通常直接用原形代替。如：
No one dared speak of it. 沒(méi)人敢談及此事。
Mother dare(d) not tell father she’d given away his old jacket. 母親不敢告訴父親她把他的舊上衣送人了。
▲值得一提的是，盡管有的情態(tài)動(dòng)詞可以有過(guò)去式，但并不是所有的過(guò)去情況都可以用過(guò)去式來(lái)表示的，比如對(duì)過(guò)去情況的推測(cè)就不能直接用“情態(tài)動(dòng)詞的過(guò)去式+動(dòng)詞原形”來(lái)表示，則應(yīng)使用“情態(tài)動(dòng)詞+動(dòng)詞完成式”。如：
他不可能就已經(jīng)離開回家了。
誤：He couldn’t leave for home.
正：He can’t have left for home.
正：He couldn’t have left for home.
