有網友問：英語的情態(tài)動詞有過去式嗎？回答如下：
▲有些情態(tài)動詞有過去式，有些沒有。比如can的過去式為could，may的過去式為might，will的過去式為would，等等。比較：
He can finish the work in time. 他可以按時完成工作。
He said that he could finish the work in time. 他說他可以按時完成工作。
注意，情態(tài)動詞的過去式有時可能并不表示過去，而只是表示一種特定的語氣（如使委婉等）。如：
Might I come in? 我可以進來嗎？（比用May I…更委婉）
He couldn’t be right. 他不可能是對的。（比用can’t…更委婉）
▲從形式上看，should是shall的過去式，但它本身通常當作現(xiàn)在式用。如：
You should ask for the bill. 你應該要賬單。
We should take good care of the children. 我們應該好好照看這些孩子。
▲有些情態(tài)動詞通常沒有過去式，如 must, need, ought to等。比較：
He must leave today. 他必須今天離開。
The boss said that he must leave today. 老板說他必須今天離開。
不過，must的過去式有時可用had to來代替。如：
The boss said that he had to leave today. 老板說他必須今天離開。
▲dare用作情態(tài)動詞時可以有過去式，但通常直接用原形代替。如：
No one dared speak of it. 沒人敢談及此事。
Mother dare(d) not tell father she’d given away his old jacket. 母親不敢告訴父親她把他的舊上衣送人了。
▲值得一提的是，盡管有的情態(tài)動詞可以有過去式，但并不是所有的過去情況都可以用過去式來表示的，比如對過去情況的推測就不能直接用“情態(tài)動詞的過去式+動詞原形”來表示，則應使用“情態(tài)動詞+動詞完成式”。如：
他不可能就已經離開回家了。
誤：He couldn’t leave for home.
正：He can’t have left for home.
正：He couldn’t have left for home.
