老師和學(xué)生的有趣對話

有一次，一位化學(xué)老師正在上課，他發(fā)現(xiàn)有個學(xué)生心不在焉，就出現(xiàn)了下面的對話。請仔細(xì)體味：　　

Once a chemistry teacher was giving a lesson. Suddenly he noticed a student who was absent-minded. He asked the student, “What’s matter?”

“Never mind!” answered the student.　　

“What’s mind, then?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

這個故事十分有趣，同時又包含著較深的語法現(xiàn)象。咋一看，沒什么可笑的地方。但是，我們分析一下就會發(fā)現(xiàn)其中的奧妙：一位化學(xué)老師正在上課，他發(fā)現(xiàn)一個學(xué)生心不在焉，就問了他一個問題：What’s matter? （什么是物質(zhì)？）　　

可是，學(xué)生誤解成了What’s the matter? (你怎么回事？)，所以回答：　　

Never mind. (不要緊，沒關(guān)系。)　　

老師覺得學(xué)生回答得很正確，因為Never mind. 可以理解成“決不是意識。”　　

因此，又問，What’s mind, then? (那么，什么是意識？)　　

學(xué)生說：It doesn’t matter. （沒關(guān)系。）他本來想說It isn’t matter. （意識不是物質(zhì)。），但是誤說成了It doesn’t matter.(www.52ysedu.com)　　

通過這個對話，我們發(fā)現(xiàn)：matter既是動詞，又是名詞。matter作名詞講，意為“物質(zhì)”，是不可數(shù)名詞。有the無the，意思差別懸殊：matter不加冠詞是“物質(zhì)”，加了冠詞是“麻煩事，故障，問題”等，相當(dāng)于形容詞wrong的用法。所以，在What’s the matter?中，句子的主語是What，而不是the matter, 因此，我們常說：I don’t know what is the matter. 而不說I don’t know what the matter is. 因為what是賓語從句的主語，語序不變。
