復合句主句與從句分別使用虛擬語氣和陳述語氣

1. 根據所述情況是否“虛擬”來決定是否使用虛擬語氣——若表示與事實相反的假設或不太可能實現的假設或愿望，則用虛擬語氣；若表示實實在在的事實，則用陳述語氣。如：

Thank you very much indeed. If it had not been for your advice I really don’t know what I should have done. 真的是太感謝你了。要不是因為你給我提的建議，我真不知道自己做出了什么蠢事來。

雖然句中的 if it had not been for your advice 和 what I should have done 均用了虛擬語氣（均表示與過去事實相反的假設），但句中的“我不知道”不能用虛擬語氣，因為它在陳述現在的事實。又如下面一句也屬類似情況(www.52ysedu.com)：

If it hadn't been for your help, I really don't what I'd have done. 要不是你的幫助，我真不知會弄成什么樣子。

2. 當條件從句含有should時，有時可以在主句使用祈使語氣或陳述語氣，以使語氣更客氣、更委婉。如：

If you should write to her, send her my love. 如果你給她寫信，請代我向她致意。

If she should be interested, I’ll phone her. 如果她有興趣，我可以給她打電話。

If these biscuits should arrive in a damaged condition please inform the factory at once. 餅干運到時如有損壞，請立即通知本廠。

其實，這樣用的句式更接近陳述語氣，因為，如果將條件從句中的“should+動詞原形”改為一般現在時，也完全可以，只是語氣上沒那么委婉些（即更直接些）。如：

If you write to her, send her my love. 如果你給她寫信，請代我向她致意。

If she is interested, I’ll phone her. 如果她有興趣，我可以給她打電話。

If these biscuits arrive in a damaged condition please inform the factory at once. 餅干運到時如有損壞，請立即通知本廠。

值得注意的是，這樣用的條件從句不能用否定形式，除非它是倒裝的（或改為一般現在時）。如：

你若不希望我們的代理人去造訪，請告知。

誤：If you should not wish our agent to call, please let us know.

正：Should you not wish our agent to call, please let us know.

正：If you don’t wish our agent to call, please let us know.

注意，如果這類句式的主句也使用虛擬語氣，則不是語氣委婉與否的問題，而是真正的虛擬語氣問題（即與事實相反或不太可能成為現實的）。如：

If he should go away, I should be grieved. 他如離去，我就會感到悲傷。

If it should rain tomorrow, we should have to put off the match. 假若明天下雨，我們只好推遲這場比賽。
