3. 當east, south, west, north用于名詞前作定語時，要注意它們與eastern, southern, western, northern的區(qū)別。下面以east與eastern的區(qū)別加以說明（其他幾組詞的區(qū)別與此類似）。

(1) 當談?wù)撃：�的、較不確定的地區(qū)時，一般多用eastern。如：

(3) 在抽象名詞前，一般用eastern，不用east。如：

the eastern civilization 東方文明

the eastern languages 東方語言

eastern religions 東方宗教

4. 漢語中說“東南西北”或“東西南北”，但在英語中卻通常說成north, south, east and west（北、南、東、西）。如：

North, south, east and west are the four cardinal points of the compass. 東、西、南、北是羅盤上的四個方位基點。

It is colder in the north, warmer in the south, drier in the east and wetter in the west. 北方冷，南方熱，東方干，西方濕。

有時也說north, east, south and west或north, east, west and south或east, west, north and south，但均不算普通。

注意以下各詞語，其方位習慣與漢語完全相反：northeast 東北 / southeast 東南 / northwest 西北 / southwest 西南
