一、描繪性形容詞
描繪性（descriptive）形容詞又稱作非限制性形容詞，它主要起描繪性作用，在句中用于回答“什么樣的”問題，如果省去不用，通常不會影響所修飾名詞的本義。如：
The French horn has a beautiful sound. 法國號音色很美。
The house has got a wonderful atmosphere. 家庭的氣氛極為美好。
A gentle breeze comes from the ocean. 從海洋上吹來一陣清風。
A good dictionary can aid language learning. 一部好詞典有助于語言學習。
Riding on a donkey is a slow mode of travel. 騎驢子旅行是一種緩慢的旅行方式。
I’ve got out of the habit of having a cooked breakfast. 我已不再保持早餐吃熱食的習慣。
I struck up an interesting conversation with your uncle. 我與你叔叔進行了一次有趣的談話。
They’re having a working lunch in Mr Smith’s office. 他們在史密斯先生的辦公室吃工作餐。
A tall woman in black was coming across the lawn. 一位高個子的黑衣女子正穿過草地走過來。
A small bridge conects the two parts of the building. 一座小橋將大樓的兩部分連接起來。
If you buy an old house, you have to consider the cost of repairs. 你要是買一座舊房子，就必須考慮維修房子的花費。
二、限制性形容詞
限制性（restrictive）形容詞用于表示事物的本質，其位置緊挨著它所修飾的名詞，二者關系如同一體。與描繪性形容詞的可有可無不同，限制性形容詞通常是必不可缺少的，如果去掉則會影響所修飾名詞的意義。如：
agrarian laws 土地法
the Elizabethan Age 伊麗莎白時代
The Industrial Relations Bill. 勞資關系法案
She’s a French major. 她是法語專業的學生。
It is a Catholic school. 那是所天主教會學校。
Those are official figures. 那些是官方數字。
It’s a Shakespearian play. 那是一部莎士比亞式的戲劇。
She advises the Government on economic affairs. 她向政府提出經濟方面的建議。
The book is arguably a potential best seller. 該書或可成為一部暢銷書。
It's an interesting idea but there are many practical difficulties. 這是一個很有意思的想法, 然而卻存在著許多實際困難。
Ageing is accompanied by a slow degeneration of his mental faculties. 他隨著年紀增長，智力逐漸衰退。
三、補充說明
描繪性形容詞與限制性形容詞并不是固定不變的。有時同一個形容詞在不同的語境中既可能是描繪性的，也可能是限制性的。如：
It is a true report. 這是份真實的報告。（true 為描繪性形容詞）
He is a true scholar. 他是位真正的學者。（true 為限制性形容詞）
