一、名詞作定語的基本原則
名詞作定語原則上用單數(shù)，不用復(fù)數(shù)。如：
a stone bridge 石橋 (不能說 a stones bridge)
a meeting room 會議室 (不能說 a meetings room)
morning exercise 早操 (不能說 a mornings exercise)
a story book 故事書 (不能說 a stories book)
a coffee cup 咖啡杯 (不能說 a coffees cup)
a baby girl 女嬰 (不能說 a babies girl)
a school gate 校門 (不能說a schools gate)
eye drops眼藥水(不能說eyes drops)
test paper考卷(不能說tests paper)
book report讀書報告(不能說books report)
train station火車站(不能說trains station)
plane ticket機票(不能說plane tickets)
pocket money零花錢（不能說pockets money）
generation gap代溝（不能說generations gap）
二、用復(fù)數(shù)名詞作定語的四種情形：
1. 有些只有復(fù)數(shù)形式的名詞，則用復(fù)數(shù)作定語：
goods train 貨車
clothes shop 服裝店
an arts degree文科學(xué)位
customs officer海關(guān)人員
2. 有些習(xí)慣上通常要用復(fù)數(shù)的名詞也習(xí)慣上用復(fù)數(shù)。如：
sports car 跑車
savings bank儲蓄銀行
3. 當(dāng)man, woman用于名詞前作定語，表示性別時，若被修飾的名詞為復(fù)數(shù)，則man, woman也要用復(fù)數(shù)。如：
men nurse 男護(hù)士
women doctor 女醫(yī)生
4. 有時復(fù)數(shù)名詞作定語可視為復(fù)數(shù)名詞所有格作定語的省略形式。如：
a teachers college 師范學(xué)院(teachers等于teachers’)
one trousers pockets 褲兜(trousers等于trousers’)
eight hours sleep 八個小時睡眠(hours等于hours’)
a three weeks training 三周訓(xùn)練(weeks等于weeks’)
注：eight hours sleep 之類的說法，既可表達(dá)為eight hours’ sleep，也可表達(dá)為 an eight-hour sleep。類似的如：
a five-second pause 一次五秒鐘的停頓
a ten-minute break 一次十分鐘的中間休息
a two-hour exam. 一次兩小時的考試
三、同根名詞與形容詞作定語的區(qū)別
1. 在通常情況下，如果沒有相應(yīng)的派生形容詞，原則上可用直接用名詞作定語，或與之構(gòu)成合成詞。如：
hair style發(fā)式 tooth ache牙疼
service counter服務(wù)臺 cat food貓食
bank account銀行戶頭 car park停車場
blood pressure血壓 birth control生育控制
table tennis乒乓球 labour force勞動力
road works道路工程 winter sports冬季運動
