only few 還是only a few？　　

——對一道中考試題的商榷

先請看一道中考試題：　　　　

【2010年阜康市初中畢業暨高中招生考試英語試卷—34】　　

There are only _______ new words in the passage, but I know ______of them.　　　　

A. some; all          B. a few; none           C. lots of; a few        D. few; none　　　　

所給答案為D。　　　　

筆者認為此題所給的答案是不正確的，至少是值得商榷的。筆者認為此題所給正確的答案應該是B，或者說答案B更符合英語的語言習慣。因為在英語中習慣說only a few，而極少說only few。因而在以下工具書中盡管沒有明確表示only few是不正確的，但卻只收錄了only a few的用法：　　　　

1. (日) 市川繁治郎主編《英語搭配大辭典》(外語教學與研究出版社2006年10月第1版)p696: 　　　　

Only a few of our friends visited us.　　　　

2. L. G. Alexander著 Longman English Grammar《朗曼英語語法》(雷航等譯 外語教學與研究出版社1991年1月第1版)p186:　　　　

There are only a few seats left. 只剩下幾個座位了。(即很少，幾乎沒有)　　　　

3. Randolph Quirk著A COMPREHENSIVE GRAMMAR OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE《英語語法大全》( 翻譯本)(華東師范大學出版社 1989年9月第1版) p355:　　　　

There were only a few mistakes in your essay.　　　　

4.《朗文實用英語詞語搭配詞典》(上海譯文出版社 1996年6月第1版) p453:　　　　

just[only] a few只有幾個　　　　

5. A. J. Thomson and A. V. Martinet著的《牛津實用英語語法》(第四版) 翻譯本(外語教學與研究出版社 1998年12月第1版) p7:　　　　

把only放在 a little / a few之前，是為了強調說話人認為該數量的確很小。　　　　

Only a few of our customers have accounts.我們的顧客中只有少數人是記賬的。　　　　

6. Michael Swan The Good Grammar Book WITH ANSWERS  p170:　　　　

Little and few are rather formal; in conversation we use not much/many or only a little/few.　　　　

既收錄了only a few的用法，又間接表示only few是不正確的工具書，如：Roger Berry 著CoLLINS COBUILD 英語語法系列10《限定詞及數量詞》(馬博森譯 外文出版社2001年4月第1版)p133:　　　　

但 a few不正式。因而，可用only a few來正式地強調少數。　　　　

There were as yet only a few street lamps. 到目前為止，只有少數路燈。　　　　

Few可用so, too, very, extremely, fairly, relatively和 how等強化語加以修飾。　　　　

We have so few role models in positions of authority. 我們在當權階層的楷模太少了。　　　　

Offices have too few telephone lines. 辦公室的電話線路太少了。　　　　

There are very few films of this sort. 這類影片極少。　　　　

They suffered relatively few casualties. 他們遭受的傷亡極小。　　　　

How few of us know how to do that! 他們當中知道如何做那件事情的人真少啊！　　　　

此外，還有《柯林斯高階英漢雙解詞典》(姚乃強等審譯 商務印書館 2008年10月第1版)p593: You can use “so” “too” and “very” in front of few. Very few firms collect tax.沒幾家公司收稅。(筆者注：以上兩書列舉了很多可以放在few之前起修飾作用的詞，而唯獨沒有only，是否只有這樣一個解釋，only 不能修飾 few，否則怎么會沒有呢！)
