face的用法、語法及搭配

1. 用作名詞，表示“臉”，注意其前連用介詞的大致情形：

(1) 表示打在臉上，其前通常用介詞 in。如：

His wife slapped him in the face. 他妻子打他耳光。

The brick hit John in the face. 磚頭打在約翰的臉上。

The branch sprang back and hit me in the face. 樹枝彈回來打在我臉上

但是，有時(shí)也可能用介詞 on, 如下面兩句均摘自權(quán)威英美詞典：

比較：He came with a smiling face. 他微笑著走來。

(4) 表示直視某人的臉，其前通常用介詞 in。如：

He looked her in the face. 他直視她的臉。

(5) 表示當(dāng)著某人的面，通常用介詞 in, to, before 等。如：

He slammed the door in my face. 他當(dāng)著我的面把門砰地關(guān)上了。

He wouldn’t be so rude to her face. 他不會(huì)當(dāng)著她的面顯得那樣粗魯。

2. 與漢語一致的習(xí)慣表達(dá)，如face to face (with) （與……）面對面，面臨，have the face to do sth（居然有臉做某事），save face（顧全面子），lose one’s face（丟臉）等。如：

She came face to face with poverty for the first time. 她第一次面對貧困。

She kept silent about that in order to save face. 為了保全面子，她對那事只字未提。

He was afraid of failure because he didn’t want to lose face with his colleagues. 他害怕失敗，因?yàn)樗�不想在同事面前丟臉。

有些表達(dá)與漢語意思相差較大，如make faces [a face] at [to] sb（對某人做鬼臉或做苦相），pull [wear, put on] a long face（板著臉，哭喪著臉），have two faces（口是心非，耍兩面手法），in (the) face of（在……面前），face the music（為自己的行為承擔(dān)后果）等。如：

The children sat at the window making faces at the passersby. 孩子們坐在窗旁，對走過的行人做鬼臉。

I don’t know what’s the matter with her, but she’s been pulling a long face for two days. 我不知道她出了什么事，這兩天她一直拉長著臉。

In the face of great hardship, she managed to keep her sense of humor. 面對極大的困苦，她仍設(shè)法保持幽默感。

You’ve been caught cheating—now you must face the music. 你的騙局被戳穿了，現(xiàn)在你得自食其果了。
