從以上四個句子可以看出：前三個句子都認為catch fires是正確的搭配，而最后一個句子卻認為catch fires是不正確的搭配。 筆者認為catch fire已經成為習慣用語或成語(idiom)，有兩個意思：　　

①著火，開始燃燒 to begin to burn(多數詞典僅收錄這一含義)　　

②激動，異常興奮 to become excited。而fires 作為“多次火災”解不能與catch 搭配使用。　　　　

首先，下列詞典把 catch fire 當作習慣用語(idiom)：
