◆mention v.

1. 表示“提到”、“提及”，是及物動詞，其后接名詞或代詞作賓語時，無需用任何介詞；另外注意不接雙賓語。如：

誤：Don’t mention about it before the children.

2. 若后接動詞，要用動名詞，不能用不定式。如：

我一提起踢足球，他就說太忙。

誤：Whenever I mention to play footall, he says he’s too busy.

正：Whenever I mention playing footall, he says he’s too busy.

3. 口語中說 Don’t mention it. 主要用來回答感謝，有時也用來回答道歉。如：

A：Thank you very much. 多謝你了。

B：Don’t mention it. 不客氣。

A：I’m sorry to have troubled you. 對不起打擾你了。

B：Don’t mention it. 沒關系。

4. 用于 not to mention, 意為“更不用說”、“還不算”。如：

He can speak French, German and Japanese, not to mentionEnglish. 他會說法語，德語和日語，更不用說英語。

Ther’re ten of us ready to help, not to mention [withoutmentioning] the children. 我們有10個人愿意幫忙，還不算小孩。

◆mercy n.

1. 表示泛指意義的“憐憫”、“仁慈”、“寬容”等，通常為不可數名詞；表示具體的幸運的事值得感激的事（通常譯為“幸虧”、“幸運”等)，是可數名詞。如：

We were given little (no) mercy. 我們沒得到寬恕。

It’s a mercy (that) she wasn’t hurt in the accident. 她在事故中沒受傷，真是幸運。

2. 注意以下各句所搭配的介詞：

Have mercy on us! 可憐可憐我們吧(饒了我們吧)!

He has little (some, no) mercy on the poor. 他對窮人幾乎沒有(有些，沒有)同情心。

He showed no mercy to [on] his enemies. 他對仇敵毫不心慈手軟。

◆method n.

1. 表示方式或方法，通常是可數名詞；表示條理或秩序，通常是不可數名詞。如：

We should use different methods to solve differentproblems. 我們應該用不同的方法解決不同的問題。

His idea is all right, but he lacks method. 他的思想不錯，但缺乏條理。

2. 表示做某事的方法，其后通常接 of doing sth。如：

Do you know any new method of teaching a language? 你知道教語言有什么新方法嗎?

He tried to change the normal methods of work. 他設法要改變通常的工作方法。

注：有時也可后接不定式，但不如接 of doing sth 常見。另外有時也可后接 for doing sth, 也不如用 of doing sth 常見。

3. 表示用某種方法，通常用介詞 by。如：

The examination is conducted by the oral method. 考試以口試方式進行。
