名詞age的幾條用法說明

1. 表示“年齡”，注意以下常見表達(dá)：

He’s ten (years old). / He’s ten years of age. 他10歲。

How old is he? / What’s his age? / What age is he? 他多大年紀(jì)？

I have a son (of) your age. / I have a son the same age of you. 我有一個(gè)像你這樣大小的兒子。

Their ages are ten and twelve. 他們的年齡分別是10 歲和12歲。

2. 表示“在……年齡時(shí)”，英語通常用“at the age of+數(shù)字”，有時(shí)可省略成“at age+數(shù)字”，或只用“at+數(shù)字”。如：

She was left a widow at the age of thirty. 她30歲時(shí)成了寡婦。

In Britain, schooling starts at age 5. 在英國，教育從5歲開始。

Larry passed university exams at sixteen. 拉里16歲時(shí)就通過大學(xué)考試。

有時(shí)也說at…years old。如：

At fifteen years old he left school. 他15歲時(shí)中學(xué)畢業(yè)了。

另外，at the age of…這類短語通常用作狀語，但有時(shí)也可用作狀語。如：

His first appearance on stage was at the age of three. 他3歲時(shí)初次登臺(tái)。

3. 漢語中說“他年紀(jì)大（輕）”，在英語中不能直譯為：His age is old (young). 可譯為：He is old (young). 同樣地，英語中可以說 at the early age of 30（年僅30歲），一般不說 at the young age of 30。但有趣的是，英語中通常不說 young age, 但卻可以說 old age（老年）和 middle age（中年）。如：

She didn’t get married until she was well into middle age. 她步入中年以后才結(jié)婚。

The fear of death obsessed her throughout her old age. 她晚年一直受著死亡恐懼的困擾。

4. 表示“時(shí)期”“時(shí)代”，多用單數(shù)形式；在口語中可引申指“很長時(shí)間”，可用復(fù)數(shù)形式也可用單數(shù)形式。如：

The 18th century was the golden age of the novel. 18世紀(jì)是小說的黃金時(shí)代。

It’s ages [an age] since we last met. 我們好久沒見面了。

Haven’t seen you for ages [an age]. 好久不見了。
