常見(jiàn)的肯定形式表示否定意義

■anything but 決不 (=not…at all)

Your answer is anything but perfect. 你的答復(fù)一點(diǎn)兒也不完美。  

注：該結(jié)構(gòu)也可如下例一般，表示“除～外，任何都…”之意：

I’ll give you anything but that. 除了那個(gè)之外，我什么都可以給你。

■far from 完全不 

The show was far from being a success. 那次表演并不成功。

■fail to 無(wú)法～ (=do not, cannot)

Even Big Ben failed to strike correctly one day when its chiming mechanism failed. 即使是大笨鐘(英國(guó)國(guó)會(huì)議堂大鐘)，都有可能因?yàn)榍苗娧b置故障而有敲錯(cuò)的一天。

注：never fail to 意為“一定”。如：

He never fails to write home to his parents every month. 他每個(gè)月必定寫(xiě)信給他的雙親。

■too…to… 太……，以致無(wú)法……

He was too young to have learned to say no to a woman. 他太年輕了，還沒(méi)學(xué)會(huì)向女人說(shuō)不。  

■the last+名詞+to不定式〔關(guān)系代詞從句〕 最不……

Jack would be the last man to believe that. 杰克是絕對(duì)不可能相信這種事的人。

He is the last person who(m) we would want to come. 他是我們最不歡迎的人。

■much [still] less 更別提

He can hardly understand French, much less Latin. 他不太懂法文，更別提拉丁文。

注：let alone 也有“更別說(shuō)”之意：

He cannot speak German, let alone Dutch. 他不會(huì)說(shuō)德文，更別提丹麥文了。

■know better than to 還沒(méi)笨到……

I know better than to do such a thing. 我還沒(méi)笨到去做那種事。

■(but) in vain (但卻)無(wú)法辦到

He tried to open the door, (but) in vain. 他試著要開(kāi)門(mén)，但卻做不到。

■more than 無(wú)法……

The heat was more than he could stand. 那種炎熱的程度是他所不能忍受的。

■beyond 無(wú)法……

The scenery is beautiful beyond description. 那里的風(fēng)景美得非筆墨可形容。

■be above 是……之力所不能及，無(wú)法……

Her lecture was above me (=my understanding). 她上的課超乎我能理解的范圍。

He is above telling lies. 他不屑撒謊。

■be free from 沒(méi)有，不

This district is free from air pollution. 這個(gè)地方是沒(méi)有空氣污染的。
